During the development process we measure all areas of the product using a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). This machine is a fully programmable measuring device that is able to measure in microns (micro-millimetres), giving a very precise measurement.

These precise measurements are then entered into the Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.

A 3D model is produced to match the exact dimensions of the original part, which enables our design engineer to produce a detailed manufacturing drawing.

During this development process attention is given to:

• Vent Configuration

An area of particular interest is the vent configuration as this is critical to the proper cooling of the brake disc.

A poor vent joint causes one surface of the disc to have more surface area, therefore absorbing more heat and more likely to crack. A bad joint causes disrupted airflow.

A correct joint is much more difficult to produce as it takes precision to join the pillars together. This kind of joint gives equal surface area to both sides of the discs which optimises airflow and gives even heat distribution.
